Occasionally, you’ll find non Porsche news items – this usually occurs when we have a strong opinion or fell off our chair laughing at something. Dealer versus Independent Repair Shop – Horses for Courses?

Horses for courses - dealer versus independent Porsche repair shopIt’s a very common mistake to compare dealership service with independent repair shops. On the surface, it seems reasonable to make the comparison. But once you get underneath and really understand what’s going on in these two worlds, the comparison doesn’t make so much sense.

Both dealers and independent repair shops have a significant role to play at times during your Porsche ownership experience. Both are focused on different areas of a similar market and so comparing them doesn’t necessarily make so much sense… Read Full Article »

Meanwhile, 122 years later….

On June 26, 1898, the P1 officially rolled out onto the streets of Vienna, Austria. The Egger-Lohner electric vehicle, C.2 Phaeton model or “P1” for short, is the world’s first Porsche. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche and is considered to be the first stepping stone before he and his son created Porsche the company. The vehicle resembles a wooden crate or an old horse-drawn carriage, but it is actually an electric motored vehicle.

Fast forward 122 years and Porsche launch the Taycan – an electric car! 122 years, later we conclude that electric power for vehicles is probably the way to go! Read Full Article »

Back to the Future – 1980’s Modern Porsche 911

Classic cars are wonderful to look at and in some cases fun to drive – many however, suffer from the problems of yesteryear. We’ve become so accustomed to all the driver aid features and smoothness of the modern car, that often the classic seems to come up short for likeability and drivability.

Clunky steering, bad suspension, heavy clutch, bulky tires, pedals that go the wrong direction – this is supposed to be fun right? When we were kids and really wanted that air-cooled Porsche, we had no idea how rough it was compared to today’s car – never meet your heroes, right? Read Full Article »

Different Perspectives

Porsche means iconic coupe or does it any more?Porsche – for many, the word conjures up an icon and unmistakable coupe with a rear mounted flat 6 engine and bags of history. For a new generation, this image and the whole concept could well be changing. Our kids have no idea how they could live in a world without mobile phones, so are we arriving at a time when people don’t think of the iconic coupe when they see the Porsche brand?

Look on any facebook, blog or repair shop website and you’ll see beautiful images of all sorts of coupes from air cooled classics to monstrous GT3 RS coupes. We’re also a victim of this thinking – that’s Porsche, right?

The Man Behind The Engine

Hans Mezger has had an amazing influence on Porsche. His engine designs are legendary and a recent article from Porsche covers most of the history with some wonderful black and white pictures from the era.

Do you remember the McLaren Tag Turbo? Niki Lauda translated Hans Mezger’s TAG Turbo design into victory in the Formula One World Championship in 1984. McLaren and the Porsche engine won 12 out of 16 races at the time and Lauda became World Champion – seems like only yesterday!

Great Beer and The First Special Edition 911

The folks in Belgium have taken another first. They have probably the best racetrack in the world at Spa and some of the worlds best beers brewed by monks.  Now they’ve landed the first special edition 992 911 – The Belgian Legend Edition.

Jacky Ickx is one of the greatest sports car drivers to have ever lived. To the close-knit community of engineers and racers who worked with him at Porsche he is a true icon. The Belgian Legend Edition celebrates Ickx’s birthday and is strictly limited to just 75 units – one for each year since Ickx’s birth. Unfortunately, it will only be available in Belgium.

Take A Technical Walk Through Under The Taycan

The PCA was recently provided access to the underside of the Taycan. In the video you’ll get to see what’s going on underneath and how the components are laid out.

Interestingly, when we saw the video we were concerned about the locations of some of the parts. Plenty of other people also seem to notice the same thing if you read the comments. There are some pretty disparaging notes in regard to the durability of some components based on their locations – not sure this car will make it through a harsh winter with plenty of road chemicals.

New Seats and a Power Tweak – Seasons Greetings

Porsche just announced it’s adding a GTS variant to the 2020 Macan lineup. The GTS will fit in between the S and Turbo with a 375-horsepower 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 and some styling tweaks – a seasonal gift to the Macan?

The Macan is the top selling Porsche model with sales of more than twice that of the 911. It’s easy to see why – practical, fast and great looks.

Don’t Try This At Home!

Accidents happen – not much you can do about that. However, it always feels a little better to know you are driving a vehicle that has past the tests that simulate some of the most severe accident types.

The Porsche Taycan recently aced the Euro NCAP assessment program. The safety body reported its findings this week and the Porsche Taycan earned an 85% rating in adult occupant safety – good enough for a five-star rating.

4 Inches Longer & 3 Inches Wider – That’s What She….

No, no, no – that’s the difference in size between the new 911 and the 2020 Corvette! The Vette has gone all super-car-like with a mid-engine mounted V8 of 6.2L. The Corvette is 209 pounds heavier than the 911 and sports 61% of its weight over the rear wheels. What does this all mean?

Finally, this means new Vette drivers will experience that scary decision moment in the tight twisty section on the track. With the new feeling that most of the weight is on the rear end, do you quit the throttle and spin round or punch it and trust that it will be stickier as it accelerates? Chasing the new Vette in a 911 is going to be so much fun!
