The free oil change
Imagine you send a postcard through the mail that says:
”Come by and see us, get a free oil change. No obligation, the right synthetic oil for your car and a new filter. You pay nothing, it’s absolutely free.”
You would imagine people would respond quickly and in large numbers.
We sent out 10,000 of these cards in Chicago to verified owners of European cars. The response? 6 people responded! Yes, that’s right, just 6 out of 10,000. So, we repeated the exercise and added in bold “keep the card, no expiration date. All new customers receive a free oil change with this card”
The response? Over 12 months we saw 8 further new customers with the postcard.
20,000 free oil changes and only 14 people took up our offer!
So, what’s the point?
Advertising for new customers in the repair shop business is not a point and click new customer situation. Ask anyone who has tried pay per click advertising! Gaining new customers takes time, authority and presence in the market. That cannot be achieved by short term advertising or by counting website clicks.
The number of times you’re viewed does relate to new business in some way, however, just counting website clicks simply doesn’t work for understanding if you’re reaching people.
