AWE Performance Headers – Porsche 911 Turbo & GT2 – 996
During development work on performance packages that delivered north of 750HP, AWE identified issues with the stock headers on the 3.6L Turbo engine. The stock headers do not optimize the gas flow to continually boost power, so AWE set out to redesign the header system to compensate.
They soon became aware that just enlarging the piping wasn’t the solution. In order to equalize exhaust gas flow across all the cylinders and to the turbos, careful study of the available space was in order – it’s pretty tight under there! In addition, ensuring the headers do not invade the space below the engine enough to provide adequate road clearance was paramount.
Awe put many design hours in painstakingly digitizing the interface between the cylinders heads and the turbos to come up with a CAD based design of the primary and secondary tubes that far exceeds any other design currently on the market. This highly engineered approach also ensures that fitment is precise – something you’ll appreciate when you try the install.
The resultant dyno and road testing showed an optimized tubing diameter of 41.275 MM. This produces an excellent balance of quick turbo spool up and massive high rpm flow. Larger diameter tubing proved to harm the low end power and turbo spool characteristics.
Through the use of extensive data logging and track testing, AWE chose to use 321 grade stainless steel to ensure long reliability of header assemblies. These are the only 321 stainless headers available for the 996TT.
+ Our Opinion
High quality headers with easy fitment and really good sound. The effort that went into designing these to fit perfectly is something you or the shop installing them will appreciate. Our feel after installing them on a number of cars, is that they aid in developing power smoothly and hold that power surge throughout the rpm. Definitely recommended. Headers are best combined with an ECU tune, intake mod such as an IPD Plenum and matching high flow exhaust.
We recommend having a skilled Porsche technician install these for you. We’d recommend you search our directory for a local specialist who can install this for you – or contact us and we’ll recommend a friendly local specialist shop for you.
