The IPD Plenums upgrade for the Porsche Cayman 981 DFI engine is an innovative “Y” style designed aluminum intake plenum that replaces the factory plastic T style plenum. The IPD design improves performance by channeling intake air to the cylinder banks more efficiently. This design reduces air flow turbulence caused by the T style design and increases air flow velocity. This results in substantial measurable power gains throughout the entire rpm band and the torque increases are most noticeable at mid-range rpm.

There are two versions to choose from depending on engine size and both require a throttle body upgrade:

981 Cayman 3.4L & 3.8L (GT4) DFI – IPD Plenum Competition Upgrade – $995.00

ipd plenum upgrade for 981 caymanThe IPD Plenum Competition Version for the 3.4L or 3.8L DFI engine in the 981 delivers impressive horsepower gains. These gains are mainly felt in the mid to upper range rpm, however, performance improvements are realized throughout the entire rev range. The added power creates a more liner power curve and delivers extra power all the way to the red-line.

The competition version is larger in diameter at 82mm versus the factory intake of 74mm on the 3.4L engine. This requires the use of an 82mm throttle body used on the GT3 cars and is designed to deliver additional air volume through the intake. The 3.8L GT4 engine does not require a throttle body upgrade. The IPD Competition Plenum and throttle body combination help to optimize the power gains made through other modifications.

981 Cayman 2.7L DFI – IPD Plenum Competition Upgrade – $975.00

The 2.7L competition version is larger in diameter at 82mm versus the factory intake of 74mm. This requires the use of an 82mm throttle body used on the GT3 cars and is designed to deliver additional air volume through the intake resulting in power gains.

+ Our Opinion

The IPD Plenum upgrade is one of a few products that consistently delivers power and torque gains. It’s not easy to extract more power from the normally aspirated Porsche engines, however, the IPD Plenum does exactly that. You can feel the extra torque available from the 981 DFI engine at lower speed third gear pulls and through to the red-line. Combined with an exhaust, ECU tune and intake, the IPD Plenums upgrade definitely delivers results.

+ Installation

Installation is pretty straight forward on the 981 2.7L, 3.4L and 3.8L DFI engine. The job is a little more fussy than the previous normally aspirated 987.2 version, however, with some patience and a little shuffling of rubber connectors, the installation doesn’t take long. Always take a good look at the seal on the throttle body to make sure it’s in good shape before re-attaching. The bolts for the throttle body are soft and easily stripped, so don’t over tighten.

We recommend resetting the fuel mixture adaptions after installing. This allows engine management to relearn the volume of air available and helps to deliver more consistent power gains.

If you’re not comfortable with installing the plenum yourself, we’d recommend you search our directory for an independent specialist Porsche shop who can install this for you – or contact us and we’ll recommend a friendly local specialist for you.
