The Porsche 911 turbo pressurizes the intake air adding power and causes significant heating. The hot air is less dense and therefore is less capable of accepting vaporized fuel causing a weak burn and a loss of power. The intercoolers on the 911 Turbo are heat exchange devices used to improve volumetric efficiency by increasing intake air-charge density through isochoric cooling. The cooler the air, the more power can be achieved through the turbo. However, too large an intercooler will cause a significant drop of the intake air pressure and result in a loss of power.

The AWE intercooler upgrade achieves a well-designed balance between cooling and pressure drop over the factory units. Awe’s upgraded intercooler gains 26HP by reducing the charged air temperature by 32F and reducing the loss of pressure in the charged air by up to 50%. This is a must if you add an ECU software enhancement, live in a hot climate and in particular, if you drive your 911 Turbo on the track. We also recommend a high flow exhaust system to optimize the performance from an intercooler upgrade.

+ Performance Specifications

+ Our Opinion

High-quality intercooler with carbon fiber duct work. The additional power created is a testament to the right design approach. These intercoolers will certainly help to maintain power on the hottest track days and result in healthier extended running of the Porsche Turbo engine. On their own they do not add power. Intercoolers need to be combined with a software tune for your ECU and for best results, a high flow exhaust system.

+ Installation

Installation requires the removal of the rear bumper. Once you have that completed the actual install of the intercooler is straight forward. The Performance Intercooler Kit features thick wall 6-ply silicone hoses with gentle curves to prevent bursting under pressure. They are attached to the factory intake and turbos by stainless steel high force t-bolt clamps. A molded lip is integrated where the hoses meet the turbos to duplicate the factory locking mechanism – this helps the hoses from coming loose which can be extremely frustrating especially at the track.

If you’re not comfortable with installing yourself, we’d recommend you search our directory for a local repair shop who can install this for you – or contact us and we’ll recommend a friendly local specialist shop for you.
