The IPD Plenums upgrade for the Porsche Boxster 987.2 DFI engine is an innovative “Y” style designed aluminum intake plenum that replaces the factory plastic T style plenum. The IPD design improves performance by channeling intake air to the cylinder banks more efficiently. This design reduces air flow turbulence caused by the T style design and increases air flow velocity. This results in substantial measurable power gains throughout the entire rpm band and the torque increases are most noticeable at lower rpm.
There are three versions to choose from:
987.2 Boxster 3.4L DFI – IPD Plenum Competition Version – $995.00
The IPD Plenum Competition Version for the 3.4L DFI engine in the 987.2 delivers even more impressive horsepower gains than the standard versions shown below. These gains are mainly felt in the mid-range rpm, however, performance improvements are realized throughout the entire rev range. The added power creates a more liner power curve and helps to minimizing the dip in power typically experienced in the normally aspirated 987.
The competition version is larger in diameter at 82mm versus the factory intake of 74mm. This requires the use of an 82mm throttle body used on the GT3 cars and is designed to deliver additional air volume through the intake. Ideally, the IPD Competition Plenum and throttle body upgrade should be combined with other modifications such as intake systems and high flow exhausts for maximum results. The IPD Competition Plenum and throttle body combination help to optimize the power gains made through other modifications.
987.2 Boxster 3.4L DFI – IPD Plenum – $995.00
The design of the standard IPD Plenum for the 987.2 3.4L DFI engine provides an additional 14 horsepower at the wheels ad reuses the factory throttle body. The DFI IPD plenum is unlike previous naturally aspirated versions that delivered stronger gains in the mid rpm range. The IPD DFI Plenum delivers a similar shaped factory power curve, but is considerably stronger from the mid range rpm to red-line, without any power loss down low.
987.2 Boxster 2.9L DFI – IPD Plenum – $995.00
The standard IPD Plenum for the 987.2 2.9L DFI engine in the Boxster, provides an additional 12 horsepower at the wheels and retains the use of the original throttle body. The IPD 2.9L DFI Plenum produces a similar shaped factory power curve, but is considerably stronger from the mid range rpm to red-line, without any power loss down low.

+ Our Opinion
The IPD Plenum upgrade is one of a few products that consistently delivers power and torque gains. It’s not easy to extract more power from the normally aspirated Porsche engines, however, the IPD Plenum does exactly that. You can feel the extra torque available from the 987.2 DFI engine at lower speed third gear pulls. Combined with an exhaust, ECU tune and intake, the IPD Plenums upgrade definitely delivers results.
+ Installation
Installation is pretty straight forward on the 987.2 DFI engine. The job is a little more fussy than the previous normally aspirated 987, however, with some patience and a little shuffling of rubber connectors, the installation doesn’t take long. Always take a good look at the seal on the throttle body to make sure it’s in good shape before re-attaching. The bolts for the throttle body are soft and easily stripped, so don’t over tighten.
We recommend resetting the fuel mixture adaptions after installing. This allows engine management to relearn the volume of air available and helps to deliver more consistent power gains.
If you’re not comfortable with installing the plenum yourself, we’d recommend you search our directory for a local specialist Porsche shop who can install this for you – or contact us and we’ll recommend a friendly local specialist for you.
