The IPD Plenums upgrade for the Porsche 911 Carrera 996 is an innovative “Y” style designed aluminum intake plenum that replaces the factory plastic T style plenum. The IPD design improves performance by channeling intake air to the cylinder banks more efficiently. This design reduces air flow turbulence caused by the T style design and increases air flow velocity. This results in substantial measurable power gains throughout the entire rpm band and the torque increases are most noticeable at lower rpm.

There are different versions based on the engine type fitted to your Carrera 996 and also a competition model that requires a throttle body upgrade:

996 911 Carrera 3.6L or 3.4L IPD Plenum Competition Version – $850.00

ipd plenum for porsche 911 carrera 996The IPD Plenum Competition Version for the 3.4L or 3.6L engine 996 delivers even more impressive horsepower gains than the standard versions shown below. These gains are mainly felt in the mid-range rpm, however, performance improvements are realized throughout the entire rev range. The added power creates a more liner power curve and helps to minimizing the dip in power typically experienced in the normally aspirated 996.

The competition version is larger in diameter at 82mm versus the factory intake of 74mm. This requires the use of an 82mm throttle body used on the GT3 cars and is designed to deliver additional air volume through the intake. Ideally, the IPD Competition Plenum and throttle body upgrade should be combined with other modifications such as intake systems and high flow exhausts for maximum results. The IPD Competition Plenum and throttle body combination help to optimize the power gains made through other modifications.

996 911 Carrera 3.6L IPD Plenum – $750.00

ipd plenum for porsche 911 carrera 996 3.6LThe IPD Plenum for the 3.6L 996 delivers an impressive 24 horsepower gain and 22 Ft Lbs torque gain. These gains are mainly felt in the mid-range rpm, however, performance improvements are realized throughout the entire rev range. The added power creates a more liner power curve and helps to minimizing the dip in power typically experienced in the normally aspirated 996.

996 911 Carrera 3.6L X51 Engine IPD Plenum – $750.00

For the 996 911 Carrera fitted with the upgraded X51 engine, the corresponding IPD Plenum upgrade adds an additional 24 HP and 22 Ft Lbs of torque with performance improvements being realized throughout the entire rev range.

996 911 Carrera 3.4L IPD Plenum – $695.00 to $750.00

The IPD Plenum for the earlier 3.4L 996 delivers a 25 horsepower gain and an additional 22 Ft Lbs torque. These gains are felt in the mid-range rpm; however, performance improvements are measured throughout the entire rev range. The added torque creates a more liner power curve and helps to minimizing the noticeable dip in mid-range power typically experienced in the normally aspirated 3.4L engine.

During model year 1999, the 3.4L 996 911 Carerra was cable throttle operated. The IPD Plenum upgrade for this model year is slightly different, yet still delivers impressive power gains of 28 HP.

+ Performance Specifications

+ Our Opinion

The IPD Plenum upgrade is one of a few products that consistently delivers power and torque gains. It’s not easy to extract more power from the normally aspirated Porsche engines, however, the IPD Plenum does exactly that. You can feel the extra torque available in lower speed third gear pulls. The competition plenum and throttle body combination enable you to take full advantage of any other engine modifications you might make. Combined with an exhaust, ECU tune and intake, the IPD Plenums definitely deliver results we’ve enjoyed over the years.

+ Installation

Installation is pretty straight forward. On the 996 there isn’t too much room to work with around the throttle body and factory plenum area.  However, with some patience and a little shuffling of rubber connectors, the installation doesn’t take long. Always take a good look at the seal on the throttle body to make sure it’s in good shape before re-attaching. The bolts for the throttle body are soft and easily stripped, so don’t over tighten.

We recommend resetting the fuel mixture adaptions after installing. This allows engine management to relearn the volume of air available and helps to deliver more consistent power gains.

If you’re not comfortable with installing the plenum yourself, we’d recommend you search our directory for a local specialist shop who can install this for you – or contact us and we’ll recommend a friendly local specialist for you.
